Question: Why Am I Here?

Acts 17:26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring’.

Paul continues to tell the Athenian philosophers about the One True God. These verses are some of the deepest verses in all the Bible.

Are we here by chance?

First, Paul talks about how our times and places in history were appointed by God. Have you ever wondered why your were born at this point in history and why in this location on the earth. Paul is saying it was appointed. Of all history, why was I born at this time, to these parents, in this city? Was it all by chance? No, God had a plan, and I was born at the appointed time and place. Why did my parents divorce and remarry, why did we move, and then why did we move again, why did I go to that high school, why that college, why did I make those friendships? There is a reason, its all part of His plan.

Why am I here?

Paul gives the answer, “God did this so that they (we) would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him…” That’s it!! God has arranged this beautiful creation; He has placed us in our time and place and circumstance; so we would seek Him and perhaps reach out and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

How can we seek Him if we are dead in trespasses and sin (Ephesians 2:1)?

Paul says that God is not far from us. Paul says that in God we live, move, and have our being. In Romans 1:20 Paul says that God’s invisible attributes, eternal power, and divine nature can be clearly seen, being understood by what has been made. So if He is so close, if we have our being within Him, if creation testifies of Him, then why does Paul say, perhaps we will reach out and find Him instead of “surely” we will reach out and find Him? Well, it is because, we were born dead in sin, we are blinded by sin. The idols of Athens were attempts by spiritually dead men to find God. So it takes God to first reach out to us and enlighten us to receive revealed truth about ourselves and about Himself. He revealed Himself to Adam, Able, Noah, Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, to the Israelites through the Law and the Prophets, and now through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Apostles.

Above I asked a lot of questions as to why my life proceeded as it did. Those experiences brought me to recognize my sinful condition, and those relationships were planned so I could learn about forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Finally, when everything came together, God also giving me Faith to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, I finally found Him !!! Thank you Father.
