19 He has not held fast to the head from whom the whole body, supported and knit together through its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God.
Key words and phrases:
He – meaning the false teacher in the previous verse who practices asceticism and worshipping of angles.
Has not held fast to the head – meaning the false teacher is quick to release the head, which is Christ, and grab onto and trust something or someone else for his salvation. Or the false teach’s grasp on Christ is not tight and sure, but is loose and willing to hold other things as well. Instead he should hold fast, be joined, be connected to only Christ for his salvation.
From whom the whole body – meaning the whole church is connected to the head which is Christ. There is only one true church throughout the ages, and the one true church is evidenced by those who are connected to Christ alone.
Supported and knit together through its ligaments and sinews – meaning the church that is connected to the head is connected together by the truth of the gospel and its love for each other. Both flow from the head.
Ephesians 4:15,16 (NET)
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Grows with a growth that is from God – meaning the spiritual growth of the church has its source of truth and love from God which Christ the head brought to man which each believer shares with each other in the body. This growth is in contrast to a false growth sourced by man’s false teachings.
Listening Prayer method – a method where you write what you think God would say to you after meditating and studying a Bible passage.
Are we holding only The Head?
I, Jesus, am the head of the church. Hold fast to Me, and your soul will be safe! Don’t hold Me half hearted or you will fall! Don’t hold Me with one hand and something else with the other hand. Hold only Me tightly with both hands. Keep your hands on Me, your heart toward Me, and your eyes on Me. If you do this by faith, then your soul will be safe, and your salvation will be sure.
Share this truth and love with those you know in my church. Share it with your family and friends. By your work and the work of each believer, the church will be conneted and held together. Through this truth and love the church will grow.
Confront those who teach otherwise. If they are not fully trusting in only Me, then they are relying on another or themselves in some way. They will be tossed around with every wind of doctrine. They will devour one another by their leagalism and condemnation. That type of body will fail and die.
You are saved by grace through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast. Yet, continue to strive to live a holy life. Not because you must to achieve salvation, but because you have graciously already received salvation. Be motivated, be bound, and be constrained in your conduct by My grace!
