Colossians 3 verses 5 to 7
5 So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry.
6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.
7 You also lived your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among them.
So – a conjunction connecting the following commands with the previous verses regarding our death from the world system, our spiritual life in Christ, and our coming day of glory with Christ at his appearing.
put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth – meaning not putting to death our actual physical body nor neglecting our body of necessary earthly needs, but putting to death our earthy-sinful lusts as listed below.
Discussion Question: How do you put your nature to death?
sexual immorality – (greek – porneia) meaning sex outside of male-female marriage such as: pre-marital sex, adultery, homosexuality.
impurity – meaning morally unclean, filthy, unholy.
shameful passion – meaning an improper emotion, affection, or lust.
evil desire – meaning a harmful, wrong, or wicked longing, craving, or lust.
and greed – meaning a continual desire to have more and to covet.
which is idolatry – meaning the worship of idols. Paul correlates idol worship to being greedy. When a person is greedy for things, they show by their behavior that they choose to worship the things of the world instead of God.
Why did Paul equate greed and idolatry?
Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience – meaning because of the things mentioned above, God’s anger will be executed on those who disobey His revealed laws.

You also lived your lives in this way at one time – meaning many of the Colossians lived a life characterized by these behaviors before their conversion.
when you used to live among them – meaning before their conversion, the Colossians used to live among the sons of disobedience.
Discussion question: Do those raised in the church avoid being a son of disobedience?
Listening Prayer method – a method where you write what you think God would say to you after meditating and studying a Bible passage.
Is Your Life any Different?
Be ye holy for I am holy. I have completely saved you. Your eternal life is secure and hid in Me. All spiritual blessings are in Me. When I am revealed from Heaven, you and all believers will be revealed with Me in glory. Therefore, don’t live like the sons of disobedience! Rather, put to death sinful lusts. Keep control over harmful emotions, desires, and actions – don’t let them live and thrive. Especially pay close attention to kill wrong sexual passions. I designed sex to be fully enjoyed only within marriage.
Do not be deceived; my anger will come on the sons of disobedience.
Should you continue to sin that My grace should abound? No! You are my follower, and your life is in Me. Do not allow yourself to be controlled by wrong cravings.
Just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also a dead faith. If your faith is alive and real, then you will desire to serve Me and not to serve sin. You will fight against sinning.
Yet if you sin, there is forgiveness through faith in my sacrifice. But don’t be deceived, your life should be different from when you were unregenerate.
