Colossians 3 verses 8 through 10
8 But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth.
9 Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices
10 and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it.
But now- a conjunction connecting the previous verse about how the Colossians once lived among the children of disobedience. Now they are to live differently.
put off all such things as- meaning put off, mortify, and restrain yourself from all things that the sons of disobedience do, specifically put off the things mentioned below.
anger – a steady – longer term emotion that wants to lash out in vengence. The emotion of anger itself is not sinful. Ephesians says, be angry and sin not, but the anger here is sin because its motive is vengeance (which is reserved only for God), and it is associated with rage, malice, slander, and abusive language.
Discussion Question: what is the difference between sinful anger and sinless anger?
rage – meaning outbursts of short-intense anger.
malice – meaning a desire to do injury or harm or cause trouble for another; in other words, evil and wickedness toward others.
slander – meaning to blaspheme the name of another.
Discussion Question: what is the difference between slander and repeating bad facts?
abusive language from your mouth – meaning filthy, obscene language directed at another, therefore, it is abusive.
Do not lie to one another – meaning not telling the truth to another.
Discussion Question: Why do people lie?
since you have put off the old man with its practices – meaning our choice to repent of, put off, suppress, and mortify our old-sin nature and its sinful behaviors.
and have been clothed with the new man – meaning we received a new nature from God through our regeneration / new birth by His will.
that is being renewed in knowledge – meaning the new man or the inner man is growing and being strengthened in knowing and understanding God.
according to the image of the one who created it – meaning the knowledge learned is in accordance with the moral image / character of God who created the new man.
Listening Prayer method – a method where you write what you think God would say to you after meditating and studying a Bible passage.
Are you Angry with Others?
The fruit of My Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. Let this fruit reign within you! See how you allow yourself to feel sinful anger and sometimes rage toward others? See how the bitterness from the past keeps rising up? See how you have slandered those who have hurt you? Don’t be frustrated and say words you will regret. Put off the old man. Restrain your wrong emotions. Live like the new man who I created within you. Have compassion on others. Build them up. Forgive them. Pray for them. Use righteous anger to motivate you to confront sin with humility, gentleness, and wisdom. Do not be vengeful. Vengeance is Mine at the judgement, and I will resolve all wrong.
