Colossians 4 verses 2 through 4
2 Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.
3 At the same time pray for us too, that God may open a door for the message so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
4 Pray that I may make it known as I should.
Be devoted to prayer – this command is not only to the masters mentioned in the previous verse, but Paul is now speaking to all the Colossian believers. Devoted in prayer means to be dedicated, constant, faithful, and dutiful in communication to God as apposed to being lacking and absent in prayer.
Why is consistant prayer important?
What do you do when a prayer has not been answered for a long time?
How do you pray?
keeping alert in it with thanksgiving – meaning in prayer, the Colossians were to be watchful and grateful. Prayer should not become repetitive, vain, and meaningless but should be relevant to daily activities and concerns, such as, food, health, providential affairs of life for oneself and others, and spiritual concerns for oneself and others. All these prayers are to be accompanied with thankfulness for the multitude of blessings already received.
At the same time pray for us too – meaning Paul asks the Colossians to include him in intercessory prayer.
Discussion Question: Do you ask others for prayer? If not, why not?
that God may open a door for the message – meaning 1) that God would provide opportunities for Paul to share the gospel message even while being limited by his current imprisoned condition, and 2) that hearts would be open to receive that message.
Discussion Question: How may this prayer request been answered in Paul’s life? How can it be answered in our lives?
so that we may proclaim –we proclaim means that Paul, his fellow prisoners in Christ, and those serving his needs while in prison may all speak forth the gospel message.
Discussion Question: Who in the church should be proclaiming God’s word?
the mystery of Christ – the mystery has already been mentioned in Colossians chapter 1 verse 27 which is the salvation of the Gentiles through the Jewish Christ.
for which I am in chains – meaning Paul was in prison because of the gospel message that the Gentiles can be saved through the resurrected Christ. See Acts 22:21-23.
Pray that I may make it known as I should – again Paul asks for intercessory prayer for himself that he will make known the message clearly, completely, and as needed for each situation.
Listening Prayer method – a method where you write what you think God would say to you after meditating and studying a Bible passage.
Are you Faithful in prayer?
Be faithful in prayer. I know you can’t see Me, but I am very close. Everything that happens is part of my sovereign plan for you and others. Yet, your prayers and the answers to those prayers are also part of the plan.
Physical and spiritual situations come to your attention constantly everyday related to yourself, your family, your friends, your country, and the entire world. Therefore, be diligent to pray that I may answer according to My will.
Be thankful in all things. My physical and spiritual provisions for you are great in number. Why ask for more without expressing gratitude for what I have already given to you?
Especially pray for souls. Pray that doors and hearts will be opened to My Gospel. You will find out later just how effective your prayers really were.
